\u201cThey\u2019ll hire some young college grad,\u201d Dave told me. \u201cNot an old guy like me.\u201d I\u2019d never seen my husband so discouraged. He\u2019d been doing great work as a field applicator for a farming co-op for 10 years, but when a higher position opened up, the company said they were looking to make an outside hire.<\/p>\n
After a few weeks of searching they finally let him take a skill test to be considered. Dave felt sure he\u2019d passed, but didn\u2019t think it would change their minds.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf it\u2019s meant to be, God will open the door,\u201d I told him. \u201cAll we can do is pray.\u201d<\/p>\n
The next day, we came home from running errands to the sound of the phone ringing. I was wrestling off my wet boots, so I asked Dave to get it. He usually lets calls go to voice mail, but I\u2019d been expecting a call from the phone company and I didn\u2019t want to miss it. Unfortunately, Dave didn\u2019t pick up in time.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho was it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cFervent Prayer,\u201d Dave answered.<\/p>\n
\u201cFervent what?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe caller ID says Fervent Prayer!\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s crazy<\/em>, I thought, and took a look. Dave wasn\u2019t kidding. Fervent Prayer<\/em>, clear as day on the tiny caller-ID screen.<\/p>\n I dialed the phone company. They had<\/em> just called. The woman couldn\u2019t explain the message on our caller ID. It didn\u2019t pop up when she called again later.<\/p>\n \u201cHow often do you answer the phone?\u201d I asked Dave. \u201cMaybe God\u2019s trying to tell you something.\u201d<\/p>\n The next few days, we prayed fervently, all right, every second we got, just like the caller ID said.
